My adopted brother just turned 18 and since he has looked like he was 18 since 6th grade I’m afraid that he might take it for granted and not take it to the limit.  Devon, live it up man.  Take it to the limit each and everyday and on some days take it beyond the limit.  I took it beyond a few times when I was 18 and I have shared those remarkable, life sculpting moments in this blog post.

I can still remember the day I turned 18. I woke up early, showered, ate breakfast, showered again, got dressed and then threw my backpack over my shoulder, smiled at the camera and headed out the door. I was going places. I was 18.

18 started off great. My friends and mom hiked up to the S and lit a giant sparkling 18 in the side of the mountain. I think they thought I didn't know how old I was but I did.

18 was the year I started my band, "Stuper of Thought." The times were great, the laughs hurt my stomach, the break up was ugly. Then I launched my solo career. Been rockin it ever sinse, because I can.

I was high on life! Every day, sometimes twice, I would throw my hand in the air and yell, "Booyah!!!"

18 was the year I did my first ropes course. It wasn't as fun as it looks because these kids totally missed me.

This was an exciting day. We were all so happy for this kid. This picture was taken on the day he finally got that booger out that he had been working on sinse afternoon recess at morningside.

I would always get so frustrated with this kid. We would go camping like all the time and we would wake up early just so we could watch the sunrise and he would alway look the wrong way. It was aggrivating I tell ya.

18 wasn' all bells and glory however. It was also the year that this kid wanted to fight me.

So I ran and hid behind this wall. But, not because I was scared. Just because I didn't feel like telling him I wasn't scared.

18. What a year. Don't ever take it for granted. 18 was the year I graduated high school, started college and got my first real job. I was going places.

I hope these pictures and experiences have inspired you all as much as they have inspired millions. Remember what Tim McGraw always says.  “18 only comes once in a lifetime.”

So I will be keeping the notes that I make in my copy of the book here.  I know that this will be beneficial to me.  I hope that it is beneficial to my readers as well.

So here we go. My notes from the foreword.

Foreword

“Whatever Your Mind Can Conceive and Believe it Can Achieve.” – Napoleon Hill -

- This is a powerful concept. Simple to state, but difficult to truly understand and even more difficult to believe and even more difficult to apply. I believe that it takes a lifetime of practice to truly and completely get it down. -

“…he dedicated more than 25 years of his lfe to define the reasons by which so many people fail to achieve true financial success and happiness in their life.”

- 25 years is a long time. There must be some substance here. -

- Carnegie commissioned Hill to interview 500 millionaires to find a “success formula that could be used by the average person.”  Hopefully I can apply that same success formula.

“The secret to success is very simple. But you will have to read the book to find out what it is!”

- In a world of autoresponders, twitter and blogs we often over complicate things.  I think we do this because some of us, probably all of us from time to time, prefer to appear and feel busy than to actually do the necessary work to achieve success.  If we are in sales we may not want to pick up the phone.  We may prefer that they come to us “credit card in hand” as we often say in one of my industries.  But many times a great deal of success is missed because we don’t pick up the phone. Why don’t do the simple things that aren’t sexy. -

“Napolean struggled against a myriad of obstacles throughout his life many of which were brought on by some of the earlier choices he had made.”

- This was an interesting line to me because I believe that there are two reasons for trials in this life. The first reason is that we make poor decisions and then we have to face the consequences.  For example if we choose to live a morally loose life before we are married we may have the consequence of STDs, illegitimate children and other life changing trials.  If we choose to smoke we may get lung cancer. Our house is forclosed on because we chose to gamble our money.  These are trials we face as consequence of our decisions. The second type of trials come as no result of our choices but as a way for a loving God to teach us a valuable lesson or to shape us into something, or someone rather, that we could become by know other way than to pass through a particular trial or series of trials. -

- Think and Grow Rich, by Napolean Hill is about more than just making money. “It’s about better way to live a rich life.”
